BE PREPARED
Do a little homework and flip through your local yellow pages to find gown salons and boutiques closest to you. Since gowns will require alteration fittings, you don't want to travel hours to get to a place where you will frequent 5 or 6 times this year.
Do you have a style or a certain designer in mind? Bring magazine clippings or some descriptions with you, the consultant will have a better idea on how to serve you.
Are you planning to purchase an off-the-rack gown (gowns that are produced in different sizes, ready to wear), or order a custom-made project? Ask what type, price range, size or collection of dresses the boutique carries to narrow down which boutique is worth your time.
Book an appointment, consultants will generally allocate 45 minutes to an hour of their undivided attention.
HAVE A LITTLE SPACE
Saturday afternoons and friday evenings are the busiest times in a gown boutique, try to book a morning on a weekday to avoid the traffic and unnecessary headaches.
BE GRACIOUS
Bring a good friend (or two) with you but not your entourage of family and friends. Most boutiques serve more than one customer at a time, animated chatter, screams and gasps can be distracting to other brides.
SHOES OFF
Keep in mind that bridal boutiques showcase merchandise that are sacred, easy to soil and valued at more than most average paychecks. Treat items with respect and remember to always take your shoes off (especially on rainy days).
DONT BE SHY
Putting on a wedding gown is no easy task. If confused, or stuck, get a friend to help you in the changing room or ask for assistance. Consultants have seen it all so don't worry about your leopard bra and mismatching panties. Don't try to force a zipper either -- you break, you buy.
NO CAMERA/SMOKING/RINGS
Most boutiques will forbid you to take photos of the gown until you have made a purchase. Ask first if you must send photos to grandma Annie to get approval.
Smoking and eating are strictly prohibited as the stain and smell will stay in these luxurious bridal fabrics. If your ring is of an envious size, take it off temporary when you are trying the gowns on, as your rock could cause a run or a snag that can't be undone.
MINIMAL MAKEUP
I know you may want to look your best while trying on gowns but keep the makeup minimal and neutral -- that means no bright red siren lipstick or harsh black eyeliner. Some boutiques might offer you a face cloth add an extra layer of protection and avoid stains.
Getting in and out of the gown is hard enough, let alone worrying about smearing your eyeliner on the pristine white gown or getting a black smudge under your eye. Leave the gorgeous makeup for your wedding day.
Bridal boutiques might be set up a bit differently than an average store but don't be intimidated. Be considerate and sensible but most importantly, just enjoy yourself!
